Stanford, Calif. - Saint Mary's freshman Katie Frattone scored two goals and assisted on another as the Gaels defeated California 3-2 in a first round game of the 2001 NCAA Women's College Cup on Friday night at Stanford's Maloney Field.
Saint Mary's improves to 15-2-2 overall and advances to Sunday's second round game against the winner of the Denver-Stanford game (7 p.m. tonight). Cal ends the season at 12-7-2.
Frattone gave the Gaels a 1-0 lead just before halftime when she took Lucianne Crenshaw's pass and fired a shot past the Cal keeper.
Frattone struck again less than two minutes into the second half, giving Saint Mary's a 2-0 lead. This time, it was Jennifer Barbera feeding Frattone, who lifted a high shot over the outstretched hands of the keeper for her second goal of the night.
Cal closed the gap to 2-1 in the 51st minute when Brittany Kirk blasted a shot into the back of the net. Kim Stocklmeir and Kacy Hornor assisted on the score.
The Gaels went up 3-1 at the 62:11 mark. Crenshaw beat three Cal defenders and drove a shot to the lower left corner of the goal. Frattone was credited with the assist.
With :03 seconds left in the game, the Bears scored their last goal when Kirk's shot sailed over the keeper's head, it was unassisted.
In the net for the Gaels, Ruth Montgomery tallied three saves while Cal's Mallory Moser had one.
Saint Mary's outshot the Bears 10-8 in the match.
This was the second meeting between the Bears and Gaels this year. The Gaels won the first game as well, 1-0 in overtime.
