2001 NCAA Women's College Cup: Post Game Quotes

Nov. 16, 2001

Recap|Box Score

California Head Coach Kevin Boyd
On the game:

I thought we had three very good chances, and I thought they had one and theirs went in. In the second half, they got their second goal off nothing. The girl was falling over and hit this ball that happened to drop into the upper corner, which is great for them. I'd love that goal as well.

On Saint Mary's and the physical play between the two teams:
I think they are a very good team. They're tough to beat, they play hard and everyone knows that we're going to play as hard as we're allowed to play. I think they did that and I think we tried to do the same thing, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

California player Brittany Kirk
On her two goals:

We didn't seem to be getting a lot of chances, so we talked about any chances we get, we have to try and crack it. We just tried to get the first one and then go after them I thought we fought hard till the end, so that was nice to get one in the last couple of minutes.

California player Laura Schott
On the physical play:

I wouldn't say I was really frustrated. In a game like that, you expect to get beat up. It's not really in my control whether something is done about it or not.

On Cal's postseason play:
I think not winning the playoff games the last three years is pretty frustrating. Every year we've had a tough draw, but every year we've had strong enough teams to also get a win. We just haven't come through yet. I'm just looking forward to next year. We have a majority of our squad returning.

Saint Mary's Head Coach Paul Ratcliffe
Opening statement:

We're just feeling very good right now. Cal was a great team, and we got three good goals and came out strong. It was a physical match like we thought it would be. We're just very pleased with the result.

On significance of this postseason win to the program:
You're just nervous in your first one. You want to get the first win out of the way. I'm pleased that the team could get an NCAA win, and we're hoping for more. I'm hoping that will give the team a lot of confidence. They've done a tremendous job the entire season. You always think it's a different game when you get to the playoffs, which I think it is. It's a lot more physical, but they came through with flying colors, which is fantastic.

Saint Mary's player Katie Frattone
On her second goal:

It took a bounce and went over our heads. I just tried to get a shot off as quick as I could, and it went in. It was a left-footed shot. It had a lot of spin on it and it spun the right way.

Saint Mary's player Lucianne Crenshaw
On playing with Katie Frattone - the chemistry:

We've been working on it most of the season. I'm playing with two new people up front and I love it, it's awesome. We're clicking up front together, and every game, it gets better.
