Cardinal Water Polo Defeats Cal 8-3 In Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's water polo team took a 4-0 halftime lead and never looked back as the Cardinal went on for an 8-3 win over Cal in the night cap of the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. With the win, Stanford advances to the Championship Semifinal, where it will face San Jose State.

The Cardinal (2-0) got on the board in the first quarter behind a goal from sophomore Julie Gardner. Three different players scored in the second quarter for Stanford, including Margie Dingeldein, Ellen Estes and Brenda Villa. Estes and Villa would later go on to score again as each player finished with two goals. After the break, Anne-Marie Keenan found the back of the net for the second goal of her senior campaign. Gardner scored her second goal of the night at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Stanford's sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Frank kept the Bears scoreless through three quarters and recorded five saves before Alli Henry came in for the fourth quarter and picked up a save.

It wasn't until less than two minutes left in the game that Cal scored its first goal of the night. Julie Arnold tallied consecutive goals and Brenna Fleener added another score with under a minute to play. In the net for the Bears was Fana Fuqua, who had three saves.

The Cardinal is scheduled to play on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. following the Cal-UCLA game at 10:00 a.m.

In other tournament action, UC Davis came from behind to defeat the Calgary Renegades 13-11. Calgary grabbed a 4-2 lead in the first quarter behind three goals from Kimberly Campbell. Campbell had five goals on the night. The Aggies erupted for five second-quarter goals, two of which came from Beth Jay, giving them a 7-5 lead at halftime. The Aggies were led by Tiffany Hodgens and Kim Parker with three goals apiece. In goal, Karly Watson had four saves for UC Davis while Megan Jeffrey had two for Calgary.

In Game 6, UCLA won its second game of the day with a 15-4 decision over San Jose State. The Bruins jumped out to an 8-0 lead by halftime and extended their lead to 10-0 before the Spartans got on the board. Natalie Golda led UCLA with three goals, two in the fourth quarter. The Bruins had an even offensive attack as 10 different players scored. Goalkeeper Jaime Hipp had an impressive game, recording nine saves. San Jose State spread out its scoring as well, with four different players tallying goals. Melanie Nichols and Nichole Lipman combined for three saves.

Game 7 saw the Cal "B" team defeat Pacific 7-2. The Bears scored four times in the second quarter and were led by Ashley Miller's three goals. Marissa Muller tallied twice and Courtney Devenish and Brigitte Donner each had one goal. In the net, Lauren Dennis had seven saves. The Tiger goals both came from Jessica Schroeder while Julie Ross recorded four saves in goal.
