Men's Tennis Advances To Semifinals Of National Team Indoors

SEATTLE, Wash. - Top-ranked Stanford University (5-0) posted its second 4-0 victory in as many days as it knocked off eighth-ranked Florida (4-0) in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Friday night at the University of Washington.

The Cardinal, who are the defending chammpion in this event and also beat Florida 4-0 in the semifinals of last year's NCAA Championships, will meet fifth-ranked Duke (5-0) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the semifinals. Duke beat host Washington 4-0 on Friday night to advance to the semis.

Stanford clinched the victory over Florida with three straight set singles victories. Defending NCAA Singles Champion Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) and senior Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) both claimed singles wins for the second straight day. Fifth-ranked Kim beat 56th-ranked Olivier Levant 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Ansari dispatched of Ross Greenstein 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Stanford's other singles winner was sophomore Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS), who knocked off West Knot 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.

Stanford also claimed the doubles point for the fifth time in as many dual matches this season. Tenth-ranked Lipsky and David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) improved to 16-2 with a win at No. 2 doubles, while 28th-ranked Ryan Haviland (Sumter, SC/Sumter HS) and Carter Morris (Washington, D.C./St. Alban's) prevailed at No. 3 doubles.
