Top-Ranked Women's Water Polo Defeats #3 USC 10-6

March 2, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - Juniors Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA) and Kate Pettit (Bainbridge Island, WA) scored three goals apiece to lead top-ranked Stanford University (12-0 overall, 1-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) to a convincing 10-6 victory over third-ranked USC (9-2, 2-1) on Friday night at the Avery Aquatic Center.

The Cardinal has handed the Trojans both of their losses this season, including a 13-12 decision in the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament on Feb. 25. Stanford is also now 5-0 against the teams ranked Nos. 2-4 in the country (2-0 vs. #2 UCLA, 2-0 vs. #3 USC, 1-0 vs. #4 California).

The game was tied at 3-3 at halftime, but Stanford quickly gained control in the second half. Pettit, who entered the night with just one goal through the Cardinal's first 11 games, put Stanford ahead to stay with a goal just 1:13 into the second half. Junior Ellen Estes (Novato, CA) added another goal 33 seconds later to put the hosts up by two.

After USC cut it to one, Dingeldein scored back-to-back goals to give the Cardinal a 7-4 advantage just four seconds into the fourth quarter. USC cut the deficit to two, but Stanford reeled off three unanswered goals - one each by Dingeldein, Estes and senior Anne-Marie Keenan (Woodside, CA) - for a commanding five-goal lead with just 3:09 remaining.

Sophomore goalie Jackie Frank (Long Beach, CA) contributed six saves in the Cardinal victory.

Stanford returns to action next weekend with road games at #4 California on Saturday, March 10th and Pacific on Sunday, March 11th. Both games will begin at noon.
