No. 1 Women's Water Polo Now 17-0

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford women's water polo team improved to 17-0 overall with a 12-5 win over No. 10 San Diego State on Friday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game played at Bud Kearns Pool in Balboa Park. The Cardinal is 6-0 in conference play while the Aztecs fall to 14-8 overall (4-3 MPSF).

Stanford had 10 different players score goals, led by freshman Brenda Villa with three. Junior Margie Dingeldein gave the Cardinal the early lead as she scored just :12 seconds into the game. Stanford would go on to outscore the Aztecs 5-1 in the first quarter. Kris Koblik scored a 6-on-5 goal at the end of the first and Julie Gardner, Anne-Marie Keenan and Villa also tallied first quarter goals.

Freshman Wendy Watkins found the back of the net in the second quarter as did Villa for a 7-2 halftime lead. In the third quarter, the Cardinal's only goal came on a power play score from freshman Jeanine Jackson.

San Diego State pulled within three goals early in the third, but Villa was able to keep the Cardinal ahead with her third goal of the night. Also scoring in the final quarter were Ali Riddell, Kate Pettit and Shannon Avrett.

The Cardinal continues its road trip at No. 8 Long Beach State on Saturday. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
