Ellen Estes Scores Three Goals To Lead No. 1 Women's Water Polo To 18th Straight Win

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior Ellen Estes scored three times and 11 different Stanford players tallied goals to lead the No. 1 Cardinal women's water polo team to a 16-3 win over No. 9 Long Beach State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at the 49er Campus Pool. The Cardinal improves to 18-0 overall and 7-0 in the MPSF while The Beach falls to 10-9 overall (1-6 in conference).

Stanford jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead just minutes into the game on goals by Anne-Marie Keenan (5:38) and Brenda Villa (5:07). The Cardinal extended the lead to 4-0 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Estes scored at 4:32 and at 4:07. The first Long Beach State goal wasn't until midway through the second quarter.

The Cardinal had 13 shots on goal in the first half, compared to just five shots for LBSU. Stanford goalkeeper Jackie Frank recorded five saves in the game. The Cardinal defense was the key to the win, allowing just three goals and 13 shots to The Beach. For the 11th time in 18 games, the Cardinal held its opponent to three goals or less. Stanford finished the afternoon with 26 shots on goal.

Villa had two goals in the game, as did freshman Jeanine Jackson.

The Cardinal concludes its Southern California road trip on Sunday with an MPSF game at UC Irvine. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
