Women's Water Polo Moves to 21-0 With Win Over Loyola Marymount

April 7, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - The No.1-ranked Stanford women's water polo team ran its record to 21-0 on the year with a 7-2 non-conference win over No. 10 Loyola Marymount on Saturday night at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal, coming off of a 7-4 win over No. 2 UCLA on Friday night, is off to its best start in the six-year history of the program. The Lions fall to 16-5 with the loss.

The first goal of the game wasn't until the 1:37 mark in the first quarter by Stanford freshman Brenda Villa. Villa tallied another goal a minute later when she scored on a 4-meter penalty shot to put the Cardinal up 2-1 after one quarter. Loyola Marymount's Teresa Guidi scored the Lions' only goal of the half.

Stanford added two more goals in the second as junior Kate Pettit scored on a 6-on-5 goal and junior Ellen Estes recorded a score with :13 left in the half.

There was just one goal scored in the third quarter as the Lions closed the gap to 4-2 when senior Cara Schindler scored on a power play goal. But after that, the Cardinal would go on to outscore LMU 3-0 in the final quarter. Junior Margie Dingeldein tallied a pair of goals in the fourth and Villa had her third score of the night.

In the goal, sophomore keeper Jackie Frank notched three saves while LMU's Devon Courtney had five.

The Cardinal returns to MPSF play when it hosts No. 12 UC Davis on Saturday, April 14, at 1:00 p.m.
