No. 8 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Pacific

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's volleyball team defeated the Pacific Tigers 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-25) in a MPSF match on Tuesday night in Burham Pavilion. Paul Bocage (Princeton, NJ) led the Cardinal attack with 13 kills.

Stanford improves to 7-6 overall and 6-4 in the MPSF. With the loss Pacific falls to 3-10 and 1-8 in conference play.

The Cardinal took control of the first game on kills from Craig Buell (Solana Beach, CA) and Billy Strickland (Malibu, CA) to go up 24-21. Stanford then took advantage of Pacific hitting errors and Doug Johnstone (Honolulu, HI) came off the bench to serve up two consecutive points to lead 28-25. The Cardinal won the first game on a Tiger service error and a hitting miscue, winning 30-25.

Pacific jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second game, but the Cardinal came back behind a Marcus Skacel (Laguna Niguel) and a William Curtis (Whittier, CA) kill. With the score knotted at 20, Stanford won 10 of the next 15 points. Bocage added three kills and Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, CA) had two in the final stretch for a 30-25 Cardinal win.

Game three proved to be the same, with Stanford coming out on top 30-25. Buell had the hot hand for the Cardinal, recording five kills in the final game. A block by Curtis gave Stanford the third and final game.

Bocage finished with a team-high 13 kills, while Strickland added 10 kills and five digs. Buell and Curtis each chipped in nine kills, with Curtis also recording seven digs. Hansen dished out 41 assists for the Cardinal.

Pacific's Dan Hoefer recorded a match-high 16 kills. Martin Berntsen added eight to the Tiger offense.

Stanford's next task will be hosting top-ranked UCLA on Saturday night. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
