Women's Lacrosse Opens Season With A Victory Over UC Davis

Feb. 16, 2002

Davis, CA - Stanford (1-0 overall, 1-0 MPLL) started the year off with a bang - a 17-5 win over MPLL foe UC Davis (0-1 overall, 0-1 MPLL) to open the 2002 season. Senior tri-captain Liz Britt got the game going with a goal at 26:19, off an assist from sophomore Jess Scott. The Aggies responded with a goal by senior Jaime Fitzpatrick at 24:46, but the Cardinal quickly found their strength and kept the Aggies at bay for the remainder of the game. An unassisted goal by freshman Nina Pantano at 22:36 started the Cardinal on a seven-straight scoring run, including four goals by freshman Julia Calzonetti, in the first half.

Up 9-3 at halftime, Stanford continued its dominance scoring five-consecutive goals to begin the second half. Senior tri-captain Emily Rodriguez put in a goal at 28:13 and freshman Claire Calzonetti foillowed by scoring two, one off an assist from sister Julia at 27:58, and then another off a free-position at 26:10. The Cardinal closed out the game with another two freshman scoring their first collegiate goals: Amanda Pettit added one at 3:07 off an assist by freshman Alessandra Salatti and Kelsey Twist put in the final goal off a free-position shot with two seconds left in the game.

Junior transfer Virginia Solomon started in goal for the Cardinal, recording 4 saves in 30 minutes of play. Junior Rachael Neumann took over for the second half and also notched 4 saves keeping the Aggies to only 2 goals in the second half. Neumann lead the Cardinal last season as the only starting goalkeeper, she finished the year with 183 saves and a .57 save percentage.

Coming off four-consecutive WWLL championships the Cardinal is looking for more success in the Mountain Pacific Lacrosse League, a newly formed league including Stanford, UC Davis, California, St. Mary's and Denver. Last season was not only the most successful in Cardinal history, an undefeated record in league play and a defeat of three tough East Coast teams, but the team also enjoyed a three-week stay at No. 20 on the IWLCA poll, the first national ranking for the squad.

Stanford lacrosse is back in action this week, traveling to Moraga to face the St. Mary's Gaels at 4pm on Tuesday, February 19th. The team opens its home season next weekend, hosting the first-annual deBeer's East/West Challenge. The Card will take on pre-season No. 10 Syracuse on Saturday, February 23rd, at 12 noon. Tickets are $3 General Admission, $1 with student ID.
