STANFORD, CALIF. - The second-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team opened its 2002 dual season with a 6-1 home win over 52nd-ranked San Diego State University (2-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The Cardinal has now won 73 consecutive home matches dating back to April 6, 1996.
In the premier matchup of the day, Stanford's K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy), who is the top-ranked player in the nation, defeated 11th-ranked Oliver Maiberger 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. The win was Hippensteel's second over Maiberger this season, including a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American on October 13 in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
The Cardinal won five of the six singles matches, including four of them in straight sets.Stanford opened the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches to record the first point of the afternoon.
Stanford and San Diego State will meet again on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (PT) in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.
