Louisville, Ky. - The second-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team (2-0) advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a 4-0 win over 52nd-ranked San Diego State (2-2) on Friday night at the Louisville Tennis Club. The win was the Cardinal's second over the Azetcs in the last six days, including a 6-1 triumph at Stanford last Saturday.
The Cardinal, which has won a record 11 National Team Indoor Championships, advances to Friday's quarterfinals against No. 9 Duke at 1:00 p.m. (PT). The Blue Devils (1-1) advanced with a 4-1 upset of No. 4 Tennessee (2-1) on Thursday.
Stanford opened the match by capturing both doubles matches to win the opening point. In a battle of two of the top teams in the nation, the Cardinal's third-ranked pair of juniors Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK/Boca Raton Prep) outlasted second-ranked Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo 8-5.
Stanford clinched the win by capturing three singles matches in straight sets. Martin picked up the Cardinal's fourth and deciding point with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Valentino Pest at No. 3 singles. In other singles action, Lipsky prevailed at No. 2 singles and junior Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC/Sumter HS) was a winner at No. 4.
