LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Second-ranked Stanford University (3-0) defeated ninth-ranked Duke (1-2) 6-1 on Friday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the prestigious USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
In the semifinals, Stanford will face Pacific-10 Conference rival and 12th-ranked USC (5-0) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (PT). The Trojans (5-0) upset third-ranked UCLA (4-1) 4-1 in another Friday quarterfinal. In Saturday's other semifinal, top-ranked Georgia (3-0) will face sixth-ranked Illinois (3-0) at 9:30 a.m. (PT).
Stanford, which defeated Duke 4-0 in last year's National Team Indoor semifinals in Seattle, won five of the six singles matches in straight sets to post the impressive victory. Two of those five singles victories came over opponents ranked in the top 25 in the country.
At No. 1 singles, Stanford's K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy), who is ranked No. 1 in the country, defeated No. 17 Phillip King 6-3, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, 49th-ranked David Martin (Tulsa, OK/Boca Raton Prep) of Stanford upset 24th-ranked Mike Yani 6-4, 7-6 (6).
The Cardinal also received singles victories from 31st-ranked Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) at No. 2, 43rd-ranked Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC/Sumter HS) at No. 4 and 90th-ranked Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA/Jesuit HS) at No. 6.
Stanford opened the match by winning the doubles point for the second time in as many days, thanks to victories at the No. 1 and 2 slots.
