STANFORD, Calif. - Second-ranked Stanford improved to 11-1 on the season with a 6-1 win over visiting Arizona State (6-4) on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The Cardinal has won four straight matches by a combined score of 26-2.
Stanford, which beat Arizona State by identical 6-1 scores in their two meetings last season, won going away thanks to five straight set singles victories.
Stanford won the Nos. 2-6 singles matches, and lost seven games or less in each of those contests.
The Cardinal once again received impressive performances from freshmen Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks HS) and Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA/Jesuit HS), who have each won four matches in a row. Warburg improved to 16-7 on the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Chris Stewart (Adelaide, Australia/Georgia State) at No. 5 and Sheng beat Mirza Duranovic (Mostar, Bosnia/Tennessee Tech) 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
Arizona State scored its point at No. 1 singles, where Matt Klinger (Toronto, Canada/Richview Collegiate) upset fourth-ranked K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) 6-7, 7-5, 7-6.
The Cardinal won two of the three doubles matches, highlighted by an impressive performance from top-ranked Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK/Boca Raton Prep) at No. 1. Lipsky and Martin routed 45th-ranked Mitchell Bowen (Sydney, Australia/Knox Grammar School) and Klinger 8-2.
Stanford will now take a two-week break for final examinations, and will return to action on Saturday, March 23 when it hosts unranked Hawaii at noon.
