Women's Tennis Rolls Over No. 5 UCLA, 6-1

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Second-ranked Stanford University (21-1 overall, 7-0 Pacific-10 Conference) increased its winning streak to 16 with a 6-1 road victory over fifth-ranked UCLA (15-4, 5-2) on Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Cardinal also continued its dominance over Pac-10 foes on Friday. The 6-1 victory marked the first time Stanford has dropped a point in a conference match this season, as it has outscored the rest of the Pac-10 by a combined score of 48-1 in its seven matches.

Stanford concludes the regular season at No. 10 USC (16-6, 6-0) on Saturday at noon at the Marks Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal can clinch its 15th consecutive Pacific-10 Conference title with a victory over the Women of Troy. In the first meeting between the teams, Stanford recorded a 6-1 non-conference home victory on April 5 at the Taube Tennis Center. UCLA will host No. 12 California (12-7, 3-3) on Saturday at noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Stanford won eight of the nine matches on Friday, including all three doubles contests.At Nos. 1 and 2, Cardinal teams knocked off opponents that are ranked in the top five in the country. At No. 1, Stanford's top-ranked pair of Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV) beat Petya Marinova and Sara Walker 8-6. Stanford's 17th-ranked pair of Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) defeated third-ranked Megan Bradley and Lauren Fisher 8-5 at No. 2.

Stanford then captured five of the singles matches, with four of those victories coming in straight sets.

Lastra, who is ranked 12th in the nation, upset the third-ranked Bradley 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2, while Barnikow, Burdette and Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) also won in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, the fourth-ranked Kalvaria improved to 20-5 on the season with a 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 victory over the eighth-ranked Walker.
