Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford University Athletic Department announced today that Thom Glielmi will take over as the men's gymnastics head coach beginning on September 1, 2002 in place of the retiring Sadao Hamada.
Glielmi served as the assistant head coach during the 2001-02 season as the Cardinal notched a sixth place finish at the NCAA Championships in Norman, Oklahoma earlier this month. Glielmi helped coach two individual champions in his first season on The Farm with Marshall Erwin claiming the rings title and Dan Gill earning the vault title.
Glielmi has spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota and guided them to a No. 7 national ranking. While at Minnesota, Glielmi was named the 2000-01 NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year and coached the 2001 NCAA pommel horse and floor exercise champion.
"Thom is an outstanding addition to our department," Stanford athletic director Ted Leland said. "The future of Stanford men's gymnastics is in good hands."
Glielmi is currently a Senior National Team Coach, and in 2000 was a personal coach for the USA Olympic Team. Prior to Minnesota, he served as the owner and head men's gymnastics coach at the International Sports Center in Matthews, N.C.
A 1988 graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Glielmi holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in television and a minor in business.
Glielmi replaces Hamada, who has led the Cardinal to three NCAA Championships (1992, '93, '95) during his 30 year tenure.
