LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Sixth-ranked Stanford University (15-2) saw its eight-match winning streak snapped with a 6-1 road loss to No. 19 USC (15-4) on Friday afternoon at the Marks Tennis Stadium. The match does not count in the Pacific-10 Conference standings.
The Cardinal, which defeated the Trojans 4-2 in the semifinals of the National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 9 in Louisville, Kentucky, dropped two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches on Friday to suffer its first loss since Feb. 23.
In the featured match of the day, the top-ranked doubles team in the nation - Stanford juniors Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK) - outlasted seventh-ranked Ryan Moore (Fullerton, CA) and Nick Rainey (Mercer Island, WA) 9-8. Lipsky and Martin prevailed 7-3 in the tiebreaker to improve to 27-4 on the year, and avenge two of its four losses on the season.
The Trojans, however, won the other two doubles matches to capture the opening point of the dual.
USC then won five of the six singles matches, with three of those victories coming in straight sets.
Stanford's singles win came at No. 2, as the 46th-ranked Martin defeated the 110th-ranked Moore 6-4, 6-3. Martin is now 22-4 on the season, including 16-1 in duals, and has won seven straight and 16 of his last 17.
The Cardinal returns to action on Saturday when it visits No. 2 UCLA at noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. USC will play host to No. 22 California on Saturday at noon.
