STANFORD, Calif. - Second-ranked Stanford University outscored eighth-ranked San Diego State 5-0 in the second half en route to an easy 12-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory on Friday night at the Avery Aquatic Center.
The Cardinal improved to 14-1 overall and 6-1 in the MPSF, while the Aztecs fell to 14-10 and 5-5.
Stanford broke a 2-2 tie with five unanswered goals in a 6 minute, 38 second first half span that gave it a 7-2 lead just 2:40 before halftime. The Aztecs, however, scored back-to-back goals before the intermission to cut the deficit to 7-4.
It was all Stanford the rest of the way. The Cardinal outscored the Aztecs 5-0 in the second half, behind two goals apiece from senior Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA) and freshman Hannah Luber (Beaverton, OR).
Dingeldein and sophomore Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA/Commerce HS) led the way for Stanford with three goals apiece, while senior Ellen Estes (Novato, CA), Luber and sophomore Wendy Watkins (Modesto, CA) added two goals each.
Junior Jackie Frank (Long Beach, CA) played the entire game in goal for the Cardinal and recorded five saves, including four in the second half.
Sophomore Holly Hartzell (Vista, CA) scored two goals for the Aztecs, while junior Amber Prestegard (Huntington Beach, CA) and senior Lisa Weise (Riverside, CA) added a goal apiece. Goalie Heather Stiles (Sacramento, CA) recorded one save in net for San Diego State in the first half, while sophomore Ashley Zabel (San Diego, CA) made five saves in the second half.
The Cardinal continues this four-match homestand on Sunday with a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches. Stanford hosts No. 7 Long Beach State (11-7, 4-3) at 10:00 a.m. and No. 18 UC Irvine (7-16, 1-5) at 2:00 p.m.San Diego State returns home to host No. 9 Hawaii (10-10, 4-4) on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
