LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Sixth-ranked Stanford improved to 16-2 on the season with a 5-2 road upset over second-ranked UCLA (16-3) on Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The match does not count in the Pacific-10 Conference standings.
Stanford opened play in style by sweeping all three doubles matches. Freshman Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA) and Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA) were 8-0 winners at No. 3, while top-ranked Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK) improved to 28-4 on the season with an 8-6 victory at No. 1.
The Cardinal then sealed its third straight win over the Bruins by winning four of the six singles matches.
Martin, who is ranked 46th in the nation, continued his hot ways with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 upset victory over 15th-ranked Marcin Matkowski (Szczecin, Poland) at No.2. Martin has won 17 of his 18 dual matches this season, and is 23-4 overall.
Stanford also received wins from Lipsky, Sheng and Warburg. Lipsky won by injury default at No. 3, after Rodrigo Grilli (Sao Paulo, Brazil) retired just five games into the match. Warburg prevailed 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5, while Sheng was a 7-6, 6-1 winner at No. 6.
The Cardinal (2-0 Pac-10) continues this five-match road swing on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. when it visits No. 22 California (14-3, 2-0) in conference action at the Hellman Tennis Complex. UCLA (2-0 Pac-10) returns to action on Friday when it visits No. 31 Washington (16-4, 2-2) at 1:30 p.m.
