Women's Lacrosse Doubles Pioneers, 16-8

Stanford, CA - The Stanford women got back into league play with a 16-8 win over MPLL foe Denver. Prior to today's match the Cardinal had lost four non-league games in a row and the Pioneers had lost their last two in the league. Freshmen Julia Calzonetti and Kelsey Twist led the way for Stanford, scoring 4 and 3 goals, respectively. The pair leads the team in scoring this season as well, Twist has 19 goals and 7 assists for 26 points and Calzonetti has 16 goals and 5 assists for 21 points.

The Cardinal got on the board first this afternoon, with a goal by Calzonetti at 57 seconds into the game. Her sister, Claire Calzonetti, put up the second goal at 9:21 and the scoring was close over the next 15 minutes, with Stanford scoring two more goals and the Pioneers adding 4 of their own. The balanced scoring ended with 5 minutes left in the half, however, when the Cardinal put in 4 unanswered goals to end the first half and another 3 to start the second.

Sophomore Abbi Hills got the scoring going in the second half, with her first goal within 44 seconds of the first whistle. Hills scored another goal with 4:28 left in the game to help cement the Cardinal's victory, she now has 11 total this season. Also with a pair of goals today were sophomore Jess Scott, who has 10 overall and freshman Nina Pantano, who has 12 overall.

Junior goalkeepers Virginia Solomon and Rachael Neumann split time in the cage and allowed 4 goals apiece. Solomon started in goal, registering 4 saves and Neumann took the second half, notching 7 saves. Solomon has started every game for the Card this season and leads with 77 saves and a .527 save percentage.

This victory is the Cardinal's 15th consecutive league win stretching back to the 1999-2000 season, it puts the Cardinal at 4-6 overall and 4-0 in the MPLL, Denver is now 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the MPLL.

Stanford is back at home at Maloney Field for their next two contests, they face Bay Area rival California on Friday, April 12th at 7pm and take on the Pioneers for the second time on Sunday, April 14th at 1pm.
