Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's golf team shot a 294 in the final round of the NCAA West Regional to finish fifth overall and qualify for the NCAA Championships at the end of the month. Pepperdine and UCLA tied for top honors, carding a 19-over par 883 for the tournament. Also qualifying for the NCAA Championships are California (889), Arizona (890), Stanford (901), Arizona State (904), Washington (904) and Southern California (908).
Individuals qualifying for NCAA's are New Mexico State's Alena Sharp, who finished tied for fifth overall with a two-over par 218 and New Mexico's Kristi Larson, who carded a four-over par 220 for the tournament.
Arizona's Lorena Ochoa took top individual honors, firing a six-under par 210 for the tournament. Pepperdine's Katherine Hull and USC's Mikaela Parmlid tied for second with a one-under par 215. Arizona State's Jimin Kang took fourth with an even par 216.\
Cardinal junior Kim Rowton tied for 19th overall, shooting an eight-over par 224 (76-75-73) for the tourney. Teammate Angela Rho finished tied for 25th with a 10-over par 226 (78-76-72) to notch her fourth top-25 finish this year. Freshman Wendra Liang tied for 29th at 227 (74-76-77) along with teammate Marcia Wallis (78-77-72). Wallis' 72 in the final round was a season-low for the sophomore. Sophomore Kim Kouwabunpat tied for 55th with a 235 (75-83-77).
Stanford is making its 14th consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships in 2002.
The 2002 NCAA Women's Golf Championships will be held May 21-24 at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Washington.
