Auburn, Wash. - The Stanford women's golf team shot a 298 on the final day of competition at the 2002 NCAA Women's Golf Championships in Auburn, Washington. The Cardinal finished 11th overall, carding a 1187 for the four-day tournament. Duke won the team title, firing a 1164 while Arizona, Auburn and Texas tied for second (1170). Georgia was fifth with a 1176.
Sophomore golfer Marcia Wallis finished the tournament eighth overall, carding a one-under par 287 (70-73-73-71) to lead the Cardinal. Her eighth place finish is a career-best.
"I'm very happy," Wallis said. "I had a great four days of one-under par, so I'm happy. I was striking the ball really well - getting everything on the greens, so I just had to worry about my putting."
Junior Kim Rowton finished tied for 41st with a 297 (76-70-77-74)while teammate Angela Rho tied for 50th with a 299 (75-72-73-79). Sophomore Kim Kouwabunpat tied for 99th individually, carding a 309 (78-80-74-77). Freshman Wendra Liang tied for 109th (80-82-75-76) carding a 313 in her first NCAA Championship appearance.
Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn won the individual title firing a nine-under par 279 for the tourney. Four players tied for second - Arizona's Lorena Ochoa, Georgia's Summer Sirmons, Auburn's Danielle Downey and Pepperdine's Lindsey Wright - with a four-under par 284.
