Deena Drossin Breaks American Record in 10,000 Meters at Cardinal Invitational

Results

Stanford, Ca - Yoko Shibui of Japan and Deena Drossin of the United States set national records in the 10,000 meters for their respective countries to highlight the Cardinal Invitational on Friday at Cobb Track & Angell Field.

Shibui ran 30:48.89 to win the race, while Drossin was clocked in 30:50.32. Drossin beat the previous American record of 31:19.89 set by Lynn Jennings in 1992.

In the men's 10,000 meters, Meb Keflizighi of the United States ran the second fastest 10,000 meters for an American ever with a time of 27:20.15. Albert Chepkurui of Puma International won the race at 27:19.79.

Liz Jackson ran the fastest time in the world this year in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Jackson, the former NCAA champion from Brigham Young, ran the distance in 9:55.41.

In the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase, Robert Gary ran the fastest time in the United States this year at 8:23.12. Jesse Thomas of Stanford was sixth in 8:39.90. Thomas' time was second-best in school history.

Stanford senior Jonathan Riley ran the second fastest time in school history and the second fastest in the United States this year in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:29.15. Colorado's Jorge Torres ran the fastest time in the United States this year with a time of 13:26.00.

Nicole Teter ran the fastest time in the world this year in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.76.

In other action, Stanford sophomore Jessica Pluth set a school record in winning the hammer. Pluth threw the hammer 196-2. She had tied the school record last week with a toss of 192-8.
