Berkeley, Ca - His last name is LITTLE, and he produces BIG results for the Stanford men's track & field team.
For the second straight year, Milton Little helped spearhead Stanford to a victory in the 108th Big Meet over the California Golden Bears; this time a decisive 94-69 verdict on Saturday at Edwards Stadium.
Last year, Little finished second in the triple jump to give Stanford a 82-81 victory over the Golden Bears. This year, on a clear, sunny day in Berkeley, Little scored 14 individual points in winning the long jump (23-9), the 200 meters (21.54), second in the 100 meters (10.72) and third in the triple jump (45-1).
Little's efforts helped produce the most number of points for a Cardinal men's team over California since 1933 when Stanford scored a 95-36 win. The 25-point victory margin was the largest margin of victory since a 87-58 decision in 1965. It was also the first time since 1966 that Stanford had beaten Cal on their home field (Edwards Stadium).
Stanford's men's team has now won the Big Meet two straight years. The last time that happened was 1966 when Stanford scored a 83-62 and 80-65 decision in the same year.
Little, a junior from Van Nuys, Ca., was one of several Stanford athletes who helped give Stanford the sizable win. Omer Inan won the discus (179-6) and shot put (56-0); Nick Welihozkiy finished first in the hammer (192-11) and second in the discus (170-6); Freshman Tim Wusu won the 110 meter hurdles (15.02) and placed third in the 400 meter hurdles (56.74).
The Cardinal men's point total was aided by a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1,500 meters. Stanford produced 13 winners in 19 events.
Stanford's women's team dominated the Golden Bears in scoring an easy 101-62 victory. It was the second straight year that Stanford has scored 100 or more points against Cal, and the 39-point victory was the fourth-largest victory for the Cardinal in the 23-years of this meet.
Freshman Christine Moschella and senior Robyn Woolfolk proved to be valuable point producers for the Stanford women. Moschella helped Stanford collect 15 points with victories in the 200 meters (24.63) and 400 meters (55.42), and ran the anchor leg on the winning 1,600 meter relay team (3:43.15). Woolfolk captured first place honors in the 100 meter hurdles, ran the second leg on the winning 400 meter relay team (46.09), and placed third in the 100 meters (12.55) and 200 meters (25.17).
Other top multi-event performances by the Cardinal women were turned in by Ashley Wysong who ran the third leg on the winning 1,600 meter relay team, and finished in second place in the 800 meters (2:05.94); Jill Camarena gained victory honors in the shot put (51-9 1/4) and second place in the discus (163-10); and Maurica Carlucci captured the 1,500 meters (4:19.67) and finished third in the 800 meters (2:09.20).
The Cardinal women picked up sizable points by going 1-2-3 in the 200, 1,500 meters, and 5,000 meters. In all, the Stanford women's team won 13 of 19 events.
Six Big Meet records were broken, including three by Stanford athletes; Kathleen Donoghue in the pole vault (13-5 1/4, school record); Grant Robison in the 1,500 meters (3:42.14); and Laura Turner in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:13.47,school record).
