No. 2 Stanford Continues To Roll, Records Fifth Shutout

Stanford, Calif. - Four different Cardinal scored as the second-ranked Stanford women's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 victory over No. 16 Florida on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Stanford Nike Invitational. The Cardinal improve to 6-0 overall and Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) recorded her fifth shutout on the year.

The offensive momentum carried over from Friday's match, as the Cardinal wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) threaded a pass to teammate Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) in front of the goal. Ward beat the Florida defender and lifted the ball past the arms of Gator keeper Jordan Kellgren for the score at 2:45.

Stanford netted its second goal at 16:35 following a Florida foul. Ward took the free kick and crossed the ball to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA), who headed it in for the score. The Cardinal added another goal in the first half when Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) connected on her blast from 30 yards out. Withers' goal took Stanford into the break with a 3-0 lead at 34:24. Stanford did not allow a Gator shot in the half, outshooting them 12-0.

The Cardinal kept pressuring and eight minutes into the second half, Carlson nearly added a score but the Florida keeper was there for the save. Stanford put one final goal on the board at 72:48. Leah Tapscott (Madison, WI) passed the ball to Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA), who found the back of the net for her first goal of the season from 25 yards out.

The Gators threaten in the 92nd minute when Crystal Frimpong nearly got a shot off, but Barnhart stepped up and stopped the play, sealing her fifth shutout of the season.Stanford outshot Florida 19-2 for the game, led by Ward's five shots. Kellgren recorded seven saves in goal for the Gators, while Barnhart had one.

The Cardinal will return to action on Friday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 29 at the Santa Clara Tournament. Stanford will face Tennessee at 5 p.m. on Friday and then battle Montana at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
