Offensive Outburst Sees Eight Cardinal Score In Win

Santa Clara, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford women's soccer team improved to 8-0 on the season with an offensive showing Sunday afternoon in the team's 8-1 win over Montana in the Santa Clara adidas Classic. Eight different Cardinal scored, led by Jennifer Farenbaugh (Reseda, CA)and Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, CA), who each recorded one goal and three assists.

Stanford put its first goal on the board when Farenbaugh got the ball off a deflection and passed it to Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA) for the score at 3:33. Five minutes later, Farenbaugh attempted to cross the ball to Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA), but the Montana keeper deflected it right to Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL). Myers then netted her first goal of the season at 8:50.

Following a Stanford foul, Wendy Stuker took the free kick for Montana. Stuker played a cross that was headed in by Zajonc McKenzie to get the Grizzles within 2-1in the 11th minute.

That would be all the closer Montana would get, as Stanford answered with two more scores in the first half. Leah Tapscott (Madison, WI) won the ball and played it to Ward, who then hit Sanderson. Sanderson passed it off to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) for her fourth goal of the season. At 31:06, Ward collected the ball from a deflection and found the back of the net from the side giving the Cardinal a 4-1 halftime lead.

Stanford continued its scoring run and rattled off four more. Sanderson started the second half scoring at 49:33 when she caught the Montana keeper leaning the wrong way off assists from Alisan Pabon (Dallas, TX)and Farenbaugh. Sanderson then returned the favor at 51:24, assisting Farenbaugh's goal in the box putting Stanford up 6-1. Farenbaugh added her third assist 30 seconds later when she hit Lisa Engel (Ventura, CA), who netted a score from 12 yards out.

Katie Wayland (Concord, MA) recorded her first goal of the season and the Cardinal's final of the day at 82:01 off an assist from Sanderson.

Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) and Elizabeth Barnard (Indianapolis, IN) spilt time in goal for Stanford, with Barnard picking put her first career save. The Cardinal outshot the Grizzles 26-4 for the game.

Stanford will spend the week preparing for the anticipated showdown with top-ranked North Carolina on Friday, Oct. 4 at the Saint Mary's Tournament. The two teams will battle at 2 p.m. in Saint Mary's Stadium.
