Stanford, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford (14-2) downed 19th-ranked UC Davis this afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center, 16-2. The Cardinal jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the Aggies notched their first goal of the day. Eight different Cardinal players scored as Stanford improved to 34-0 all-time against the Aggies.
In the first period of play, the Cardinal grabbed a 6-0 lead as Stanford connected on six of its nine shots. The defense held UC Davis to only one shot in the first seven minutes of play and stopped the Aggies on all eight of their 6-on-5 opportunities throughout the game.
Senior Jeff Guyman got the day started, winning the first sprint of the match before tallying the first goal 54 seconds into the game on a man-up shot. Sophomore Tony Azevedo then posted his first goal 19 seconds later before junior Mike Derse added another quick mark at 4:35. Guyman and Azevedo both chalked up another goal before sophomore Reed Gallogly closed out the first quarter of scoring. The Cardinal scored their first six point in less than four minutes. Stanford made another push in the second quarter as Azevedo put up two more goals before leaving the game. Freshman Thomas Hopkins scored his first goal of the game with 52 seconds remaining in the first half to give Stanford a 9-1 halftime lead.
Stanford returned in the second half with a new goalkeeper. Senior Nick Ellis started the game and posted one save before freshman Chad Taylor entered the game in relief at the beginning of the third quarter. Taylor collected five saves and allowed only one goal during the second half of play.
On offense, Stanford added another seven goals in the final two periods, including two by freshman Trent Wiesen and three from Hopkins. Sophomore Greg Crum and freshman Peter Varellas each posted one goal in the second half as the Cardinal earned the 16-2 victory.
Stanford is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 19 for a noon match against Long Beach State and return on Sunday, Oct. 20 for another midday game against UCLA.
