No. 1 Stanford Downs No. 9 Long Beach State 14-6

Stanford, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford (15-2, 3-1) handed the ninth-ranked Long Beach State 49ers (10-11, 0-3) a 14-6 loss this afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center. The 49ers were able to stay close for most of the first quarter, but the Cardinal pulled out to a 5-3 lead and took over for the rest of the match.

Junior Mike Derse got the scoring started with a goal one minute into the game, but Long Beach rallied with two quick goals by Aaron Holloway. Senior Peter Hudnut brought the Cardinal even for a 2-2 tie, but the 49ers notched another goal to take its final lead of the game. Freshman Thomas Hopkins scored to bring the Cardinal into the third tie of the day before senior Jeff Nesmith notched the go-ahead goal with 2:24 remaining in the first period.

Sophomore Tony Azevedo, whose father Rick is the head coach of Long Beach, scored four times today, including two in the second quarter to extend the Cardinal lead to four. Azevedo also scored on a four-meter penalty in the third period and marked the only score in the fourth quarter.

Senior goalkeeper Nick Ellis tallied eight saves while the 49ers' keepers combined for seven.

The Cardinal are back in action tomorrow against No. 4 UCLA in a non-league matchup. The game is set to begin at noon.
