MIDLAND, Tex. - Sophomore Sam Warburg won his first collegiate singles tournament title with a three-set victory over Toni Gordon of Texas Christian in the final of The Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Warburg, who was seeded fifth in the 32-player draw, outlasted the top-seeded Gordon 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1.
Gordon, who had reached the final with a 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 victory over seventh-seeded Ante Matijevic on Sunday morning, was down 6-5 and 40-0 in the first set before rallying to tie the match and win the ensuing tiebreaker 7-4.
