No. 1 Stanford Edges No. 5 UC Irvine 9-8

Oct. 25, 2002

Irvine, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford (17-2, 4-1 MPSF) edged fifth-ranked UC Irvine (10-6, 1-2 MPSF) 9-8 this evening in Mountain Sports Federation play at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Both teams scored quickly in the first period, with sophomore Tony Azevedo posting two for the Cardinal and Garrett Gentry tallying all three of his goals in the first seven minutes of play. Scoring remained even for the next two periods giving UC Irvine the one point lead heading into the final quarter.

Stanford rallied with one minute into the fourth period on a goal by senior Peter Hudnut, but the Anteaters reclaimed the lead at 2:39 on an extra-man goal. Freshman Thomas Hopkins responded on the next Stanford possession and tied the game at 8-8 with 2:09 to go. Azevedo then finished the Anteaters off with a man-up goal at 44 seconds to secure the Cardinal win as Stanford outscored UC Irvine 3-1 in the final period.

"Peter and Tony kept us in the game," commented head coach John Vargas. "Thomas scored a big goal to tie it and then Tony got the game-winner. Tony and Peter showed great leadership offensively and defensively."

The Cardinal are back in action tomorrow against No. 2 UCLA in a conference game. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. Stanford defeated UCLA 7-5 in a non-league matchup last Sunday on The Farm.
