Intrasquad Meet Sees White Team Fall Cardinal Team 26-16

Oct. 30, 2002

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford Wrestling season began today with the annual intrasquad meet. 24 athletes competed today as the white team downed the cardinal team 26-16.

In the most intense match of the afternoon, redshirt freshman Zack Hensley (Monroe, OH/Lemon-Monroe) fought back from a 6-3 deficit to sophomore Scott Polley (Bonner Springs, KS/Bonner Springs) starting the third period to tie the bout at 6-6 with just over one minute to go. Polley earned an escape and takedown, but Hensley escaped giving Polley the two-point lead. With ten seconds remaining in regulation, Hensley fought for another takedown to send the match into overtime. Hensley then scored his final takedown of the bout to claim the 11-9 overtime win.

Returning starter and 2002 NCAA Qualifier Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) posted an 11-4 decision over junior Paul Gross (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union). Metzler commented, "We wrestled with a lot of heart today, but we still have a lot of room for improvement before our first duals."

Stanford's two seniors both claimed victories as Justin Walker (Otis Orchards, WA/East Valley) snagged a 6-2 win while Harold Penson (Richmond Heights, OH/Richmond Heights) collected a 17-2 technical fall at 6:03. Redshirt freshman Nick Lukens (Lebanon, OH/Moeller) earned some attention after earning a 15-3 major decision over returning starter junior Matt Twomey (Bloomfield Village, MI/Seaholm), while true freshmen Josh Brown (Half Moon Bay, CA/Half Moon Bay) and Brian Perry (Columbia, MO/Hickman) took a 9-0 win and a 5-3 victory, respectively.

"Today was a great starting point," said head coach Steve Buddie. "We saw a lot of positive things and some things that we need to fix. Overall, there were some very pleasant surprises from individuals as well as some solid performances by our team leaders. We're excited to start the season at home against two worthy opponents, but this team expects to win both duals."

Stanford will host Menlo College and Navy on Friday, Nov. 8th at 5 pm and 7 pm in Burnham Pavilion.
