Moraga, Calif. - Alyssa Ramsey scored at 59:12 for No. 2 North Carolina as the Tar Heels went on to defeat the top-ranked Stanford women's soccer team 1-0 on Friday afternoon in the first game of the Saint Mary's Fall Classic. Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) had five shots for the Cardinal, which outshot North Carolina 12-11 for the game.
Stanford controlled the first 30 minutes of the game, maintaining possession of the ball. The Cardinal got their best chance in the first half on the first corner kick of the game at 27:10. Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) took the corner and sent a cross to Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA), who headed the ball to the North Carolina keeper.
North Carolina then answered back, with shots by Anne Morrell and Lori Chalupny that sailed just wide. Stanford got back-to-back corners in the 37th minute, only to find shots fall wide and high by Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA) and Withers. The Tar Heels pressured the final 10 minutes of the half, but Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) made some great saves from eight yards out and on corner kicks to preserve the score at 0-0 heading into the break.
Two minutes into the second half, Ward led a Stanford breakaway sending a pass to Wallis. Wallis collected the ball and her shot missed just wide. Following a corner kick by the Cardinal in the 55th minute, North Carolina came back and Lindsay Tarpley played a ball to Ramsey. Ramsey then hooked the ball past Barnhart for the score and 1-0 lead.
The Cardinal had chances to score an equalizer, but just could not connect. Off a North Carolina foul, Marquand played the free kick from 50-yards out and sent a cross that was nearly headed in by Wallis. Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, CA) came off the bench and add a shot that sailed just wide in the 77th minute.
Following a shot and save by North Carolina's Anne Felts and Barnhart, Ward got a good shot off at 84:45 but the Tar Heel keeper was there for the save.
Stanford outshot North Carolina 12-11, with five coming from Wallis. Barnhart played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cardinal, collecting a season-high six saves. The Tar Heel score is only the third goal allowed by Stanford all year as they fall to 8-1-0, and North Carolina improves to 9-0-2.
The Cardinal will continue play at the Saint Mary's Fall Classic on Sunday as they battle Tulane at noon at Saint Mary's Stadium.
