No. 1 Stanford Advances to NorCal Semifinals

Berkeley, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford (11-1) downed two opponents today to advance to the semifinals of the 2002 NorCal Tournament in Berkeley earlier today. Stanford started the morning with a 22-4 victory over UC Santa Cruz before falling No. 8 Loyola Marymount (6-7), 15-6. Sophomore Tony Azevedo led the Cardinal in scoring with 11 goals on the day, seven of which came against the Lions.

Twelve different Stanford players scored during the 22-4 victory over UC Santa Cruz this morning. Stanford took immediate control of the game with a 15-1 margin at the half. Azevedo led the game with four goals while sophomore Matt Moser and freshman Thomas Hopkins each added three more. Peter Varellas, Ryan Caswell and Greg Crum all tallied two goals while six more scored one goal against the Banana Slugs. Redshirt freshman Chad Taylor notched one save for Stanford in goal while the UC Santa Cruz goalies combined for 11 saves.

In the second game of the day, Azevedo again displayed his offensive skills, scoring seven goals as the Cardinal defeated eighth-ranked Loyola Marymount 15-6. Crum added three goals and Hopkins tacked on two more while Peter Hudnut and Reed Gallogly notched one apiece. Stanford started strong in its second game of the day, outscoring the Lions 9-2 in the first half. Senior keeper Nick Ellis collected 6 saves in goal while LMU goalie Justin Coleman posted 11 saves.

Stanford will face No. 3 USC (11-2) in tomorrow morning's first semifinal game at 9:50 a.m. at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. USC defeated No. 4 California 8-7 in triple overtime to advance to the semifinals. UC Irvine and UCLA will compete in the second semifinal game on Sunday at 11 a.m. The third place match is set to start at 3:30 p.m. and will be followed by the championship match at 4:30 p.m. For complete results of the NorCal Tournament please refer to the California site at www.calbears.com.
