Freshman Sailor Brian Haines QualifiesFor Singlehanded Nationals

Oct. 7, 2002

On Sunday, freshman Brian Haines clinched one of two berths to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's National Singlehanded Championship. Surviving a two day qualifier with various wind conditions was tough, "Even as the conditions changed, Brian was consistent throughout the series, rarely finishing out of the top 7," said coach Jay Kehoe. The qualifier, hosted by Cal at their sailing center in Treasure Island, was very competitive with 21 sailors competing from the Pacific Coast district in singlehanded Laser dinghies (the same boats are presently used in the Olympics). After winning this event for the past two years, Stanford senior Dave Kenny earned 6th, just a few points away from the top 5. "Kenny's support was instrumental to Brian's success," commented Coach Kehoe. "it was great to see the team work together, even for singlehanded competition." Sophomore Jeff Allen posted an impressive 10th while teammate Andy Mesher finished 21st. With similar qualifiers taking place in the other seven college sailing districts around the country, Haines will face off against 15 other top collegiate singelhanded sailors when he attends the Singlehanded National Championships, November 8-10, hosted by U Texas in Houston.
