Austin, Tex. - No. 2 Stanford (2-0) concluded a two-day double-dual meet Saturday by recording a pair of victories over No. 7 Texas (2-1) and No. 8 USC (0-2) at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. Stanford outscored Texas by a 184-169 margin and USC, 190-163. Texas also edged USC, 177-176. The victories extend Stanford's dual meet win streak to 15 in a row.
"I was really proud of our team's effort," said Stanford head women's swimming coach Richard Quick. "Like any first competition of the season, there were many areas where we could improve in, but that is exciting because it means we can get better."
Stanford swimmers and divers won four of Saturday's 11 events. Tara Kirk and Kristin Caverly highlighted Stanford's efforts by recording NCAA "A" qualifying standards in the 100 breast (1:00.69) and 200 IM (2:00.73), respectively. Kirk's victory in the 100 breast extends her collegiate unbeaten string in the event to 18 straight. Lacey Boutwell also won her third event of the meet with a victory in the 200 free, recording an NCAA "B" mark of 1:49.04. McKenze Murphy picked up a victory in platform diving, scoring 410.45 points.
USC's Kaitlin Sandeno completed an outstanding meet by taking the 1650 free in a time of 16:31.48 for her fourth individual victory. Texas' Sarah Wanazek had a pair of individual wins in the 50 free (23.29) and 100 back (55.83). USC's Jana Krohn won the 200 fly in 1:59.95, while USC diver Blythe Hartley picked up her second diving win of the meet with a victory in the one-meter (319.80 points).
Texas was victorious in both the 200 medley (1:42.60) and 400 free (3:23.58) relays, giving the Longhorns a clean sweep of the four relays in the meet. Stanford recorded NCAA "B" marks in both relays. A team of Megan Baumgartner, Tara Kirk, Dana Kirk and Sarah Jones finished second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.45. Boutwell, Tami Ransom, Jones and Dana Kirk placed third in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:25.91.
Caverly continued a strong meet with two more second-place finishes, giving her a total of four runner-up finishes in her first collegiate meet. Caverly finished second in both the 100 breast (1:02.84) and 100 back (56.38), recording NCAA "B" times in both. Other NCAA "B" marks recorded by Cardinal swimmers included Boutwell in the 50 free (23.46), Evins Cameron in the 1650 free (16:53.30) and Ashley Daly in the 200 IM (2:04.14).
