Stanford Hosts Menlo College and Navy in Triple Header

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford (1-1) opened its 2002-03 season with a win and a loss, defeating Menlo College 23-15 before falling to Navy 28-13. Stanford used two major decisions and a pin to down Menlo College in its first meet of the day. The Cardinal then saw a 13-13 tie end against the Midshipmen with two consecutive pins as Navy handed the Cardinal its first loss of the year.

In the first meet of the triple header, the Navy Midshipmen fell the NAIA fifth-ranked Menlo College Oaks, 30-6.

Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) opened his sophomore season with two major decisions, a 10-0 shutout over Menlo College's Isaac Pumajero and an 11-1 win over Navy's Matt Gulosh. Metzler was one of four Stanford NCAA Qualifiers in 2002 and owned a 16-11 record last season.

Justin Walker (Otis Orchards, WA/East Valley) earned at 141 pounds two decisions to begin his senior season. Walker posted an 8-2 win over the Oaks' Fernando Flanagan and then notched a 7-3 decision over Navy's Nate Gulosh. Both wins gave the Cardinal a 7-6 edge in the meets.

Sophomore Scott Polley (Bonner Springs, KS/Bonner Springs) earned his first win of the year with a 12-10 decision over the NAIA's top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, Saul Lucatero. Polley capped his night by holding onto a 6-3 decision over the Midshipmen's Paul Lukanich.

Redshirt freshman Ryan Hagen (Sidney, MT/Sidney) started his Cardinal career with two big wins tonight. In his collegiate debut, Hagen pinned Menlo's David de la Fuente at 2:11. Hagen's next bout saw him wrestle for 7:47 as he fought back from a 4-2 deficit in the third period to tie the match a 4-4 and send it into overtime. After 47 seconds, Hagen fought through and won a scramble to earn the 6-4 decision and tie the meet score at 13-13.

Stanford returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 20th as the Cardinal welcome San Francisco State for a 7 p.m. dual.

Meet Notes:
At 133, Gulosh took the first points with 23 seconds remaining in the first period to hold a 2-0 lead going into the second and then took the 5-0 lead early in the second, but with under ten seconds left in the second, Pumajero earned a reversal and near fall to tie the score at 5-5. Pumajero earned an escape to start the third period, but with over one and a half minutes of riding time for Gulosh, the bout went into overtime where Gulosh earned a reversal in the second ot period for the win.
At 149, the top ranked wrestler in the NAIA Lucatero took the 9-5 win.
At 157, eighth-ranked wrestler in the NAIA Martinez took the first take down with 17 seconds left in the first period and controlled the rest of the way to earn the 5-0 shutout.
At 165, in the second period Lazzo earned two escapes while Lucatero grabbed one takedown for a 2-2 tie, but with 12 seconds to go, Lucatero earned an escape for a 3-2 lead, but Lazzo earned a takedown with 4 seconds left for the 5-3 win.At 184, the overtime match ended when Paxton earned the takedown less than 20 seconds into the first overtime period.
At 285, Kovach broke the match open in the second period with a 2 point takedown with 11 seconds left and secured the eventual win at 5-2.

Meet Notes:
At 133, the 17th-ranked Metzler took the early 3-0 lead in the first period, before adding an escape, takedown and near fall to carry a 9-0 lead into the final period before earning riding time to win the major decision.
At 141, Walker won the decision to pull the Cardinal ahead in the meet 7-6.
At 149, Polley won a 12-10 decision over the NAIA's top-ranked Lucatero.
At 157, The NAIA's eighth-ranked Martinez took a major decision over Johnston to tie the meet at 10-10.
At 165, Corbett earned the first point with an escape to start the second but with 1:36 to go in regulation, Lucatero earned an escape, tying the bout at 1-1 and sending the bout into overtime. 28 seconds into the extra period, Corbett took the win 3-1 win.
**Referee deducted one point from Menlo College for unsportsman-like conduct to give the Cardinal a 13-9 match lead.**
At 174, Hagen earned Stanford's first pin of the season with a fall at 2:11.
At 184, Penson opened the second period with a takedown to score the first points of the bout for a 2-0 lead. Penson then worked for two near falls to extend his margin to 8-0 before earning riding time for the 9-0 major decision.

Meet Notes:
At 133, less than one minute into the bout, Metzler took a4-0 lead as he threw Gulosh down to his back for a combination takedown and near fall.
At 165, With the score tied at 3-3 entering the third, Lazzo took control in the final moments to earn the 6-4 decision.
At 174, Hagen started the third period down 4-2, but with a stall warning point and an escape, Hagen fought back to a 4-4 tie and took the bout into overtime and secured the win in 47 seconds after coming out on top of a scramble after his shot. Hagen's win brought the Cardinal into a 13-13 meet score.
At 174, Paxton records a pin to give the Midshipmen a 19-13 lead.
At 184, Letchford scores a pin to secure the Navy victory at 25-13 and one bout remaining.
