Stanford Takes Fourth at MPSF Tournament

Los Alamitos, Calif. - Stanford (22-5) fell to UCLA (15-8) 8-6 tonight in the third place game at the MPSF Championship Tournament, hosted by Long Beach State at The Joint Forces Training Base. The Bruins claims third place in the conference while Stanford takes fourth.

UCLA put the first score on the board today with a goal by Dan Yielding just over one minute into the game. Senior Jeff Guyman rallied for the Cardinal, but the Bruins put up two more to take the 3-1 lead with 17 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Stanford senior Jeff Nesmith chipped in a goal with two seconds left to bring Stanford within one.

UCLA opened up the second period with another Yielding score, but sophomore Tony Azevedo countered with his first score of the game. Josh Hewko tallied one for the Bruins before Cardinal junior Mike Derse notched the final goal of the half, cutting UCLA's lead to 5-4.

In the third quarter, Stanford came out strong with Azevedo notching a goal less than two minutes in to tie the game, but the Bruins Matt Flesher scored his first goal of the day to regain control for the Bruins. Nesmith rallied again for the Cardinal with 41 seconds left in the third quarter, but Flesher posted two more goals in the fourth quarter, giving UCLA the 8-6 win.

Stanford fought hard on offense as UCLA keeper Brandon Brooks collected 15 saves today, while Cardinal keeper Nick Ellis recorded eight.
