Stanford, Calif. - Stanford and Portland battled to a 0-0 tie for 110 minutes in the NCAA Women's Soccer Quarterfinal match on Saturday night at Maloney Field before the Pilots came away with the 4-2 victory in penalty kicks in front of a packed house of 3049 fans. Portland advances to the Women's College Cup, while the Cardinal end their season at 21-2-0.
Portland's Colleen Salisbury netted the game-winning score on the Pilots' fourth penalty kick. Stanford's Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) took the first kick, but her shot hit the post and bounced out. Following a Portland make, Natalie Spilger (El Cajon, CA) connected tying the score at 1-1. Kristen Rogers then gave the Pilots a 2-1 advantage. Natalie Sanderson's (Ventura, CA) attempt missed and Christina Sinclair netted her kick to hold a 3-1 lead. Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) put the Cardinal within 3-2, but Salisbury connected giving Portland the 4-2 win.
Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, each recording four shots. Stanford goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) came up with big saves just 13 minutes into the game off shots from Rogers and Lindsey Huie. Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) recorded the Cardinal's first shot in the 27th minute, but was collected by Portland keeper Lauren Arase. Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) got a shot off two minutes before halftime, only to be saved by Arase.
Neither team registered a shot in the first 30 minutes of the second half. Portland's Huie got a shot off in the 76th minute and was saved by Barnhart. Two minutes later, Jennifer Farenbaugh (Reseda, CA) had the best scoring opportunity of the game. Farenbaugh fired a shot in the 78th minute that Arase made an unbelievable save, preserving the 0-0 tie. Portland's Lauren Orlandos' shot attempt at the end of regulation off a free kick was saved sending the game into overtime.
No shots were recorded in the first extra period and neither team had much of a scoring opportunity. Withers registered a shot in the 103rd minute, but it sailed wide. At the end of 110 minutes with the score knotted at 0-0, both teams fired six shots and Arase and Barnhart had three saves apiece.
Stanford ends the year at 21-2, marking the most wins in a season, and a Pacific-10 Championship.
