Coed Sailors Qualify For North Americans

April 29, 2002

Keehi Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii - Sailing the Pacific Coast Championships at the same venue that will host the 2002 North American Championship, the Stanford coed sailing team finished a solid second to hometown team U Hawaii to secure one of two Pacific Coast berths in the upcoming Coed Dinghy NA's. The victory is especially sweet considering the Cardinal sailors were able to come back from an initial setback on Friday, when the squad failed to earn a top two spot at the PCC Team Racing qualifiers. Their record of 6 wins and 4 losses earned them 3rd overall behind U Hawaii and UCSB.

Friday's Team Racing squad was comprised of David Kenny '03 and crew Jess Gray '04, Ted Conrads '03 and Amy Halvorsen '05, Peter Deming '04 and Lauren Gross '05, and David Phillips '04 with Kara Sweeney. The Team racing format pits three boats from one team against three boats from another team. Each team utilizes rules and maneuvers to help their team finish the race in a winning combination that results in a win-loss record. Wind was surprisingly light for most of the day, which is unusual for the Keehi Harbor venue. The Cardinal suffered two early losses, then went on to beat both Hawaii and UCSB later in the day. However, four losses keep them out of the top two, and out of the NA's.

Dinghy PCC's started on Saturday in windier conditions that built to the typical Hawaiian tradewinds by Sunday. After series of solid regattas over the spring season, Dave Phillips '04 and Kara Sweeney '03 earned the starting position in A Division for the Cardinal. Ted Conrads '03 and Amy Halvorsen '05/Sarah Zukerman '03 competed in B Division. After 36 races in two days, the Stanford teams earned 3rd in A and 2nd in B, with a point total of 125, eight points ahead of UCSB.

The Stanford sailors have one month to prepare for the Women's and Coed Nationals, to be held in Hawaii May 29-31 and June 5-7, respectively. Eighteen schools from the seven college sailing districts around the country qualify for the Women's and Coed Collegiate Sailing Asociation North American Championships. Twelve schools qualify for the ICSA Team Race NA's.
