Cherry Hill, NJ - In hot and humid conditions, the Cardinal Men raced in the first day of the IRA National Championships, May 30. The morning heats proved tough as the Varsity Men placed third in their heat by less than a second, beating Brown University, and two other crews. The Freshmen 8+ crossed the line fifth in its heat.
The afternoon racing proved to be the toughest of the year as the Varsity 8+ raced to advance into the semifinals. The Cardinal trailed in the early going of the race but fought back to challenge the other crews for the last Semifinal berth. The Varsity Men battled seat for seat with Boston University and Michigan throughout the race before Michigan made a move in lane six, cementing their second-place finish. The Cardinal nipped BU taking third in their Repechage, two seconds out of second place and three seconds behind repechage winner Cornell.
The Cardinal frosh 8+ had a disappointing start to the regatta, finishing fifth in its heat. The Repechage race was more indicative of the V's abilities but it was not enough to advance to the Semis. Later in the afternoon in what was one of the most exciting races of the day, the Cardinal battled with Northeastern from the first stroke of the race to the last, losing by 12 hundredths of a second. They finished four seconds behind Repechage winner Navy.
The Cardinal races again on Friday, May 31 in the Varsity 8+ and Saturday June 1 in the Freshmen 8+.
