Berkeley, CA - Stanford recorded its tenth win of the season today to advance to the Mountain Pacific Lacrosse League Championship game. The Cardinal handed St. Mary's a 14-11 loss today at Memorial Stadium on the UC Berkeley campus.
The Cardinal took a quick 2-0 lead on shots by sophomore Jess Scott, but the Gaels bounced back and evened up the score. Freshman Nina Pantano notched one of her three goals on the day to put the Cardinal up by one and freshman Claire Calzonetti tabbed another goal. Senior Liz Britt and sophomore Abbi Hills each chalked up a goal in the first half, but the Gaels scored two more and refused to give up. The Cardinal led at halftime 6-4.
Stanford took control of the game to open the second half, scoring five goals in the first 15 minutes and holding St. Mary's to one. Pantano put up the first goal of the second half, followed by freshman Kelsey Twist. Freshman Julia Calzonetti then fired off two goals, putting Stanford on top 10-5. Britt tallied two more goals while Pantano notched her third of the day as well as senior Emily Rodriguez recording her first goal of the game to secure the 14-11 Stanford victory.
The Cardinal will face California tomorrow at 2 p.m. for the inaugural MPLL Championship. The Bears defeated Denver 15-11 in today's other semifinal match to advance to the final game. Stanford has previously defeated Cal twice this season.
