No. 1 Stanford Advances to Semifinals of SoCal Tournament

Los Angeles, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford (4-0) opened play at the SoCal Tournament on the campus of USC this afternoon with a 10-6 victory over No. 10 Long Beach State (4-2) and completed Saturday's competition with a 10-4 win over No. 8 UC San Diego.

Against the 49ers the Cardinal took a 9-0 lead at halftime before closing out the game at 10-6. Junior Mike Derse and sophomore Tony Azevedo (whose father, Rick, coaches Long Beach State) each recorded three goals while Peter Hudnut, Jeff Guyman, Greg Crum and Thomas Hopkins added one goal apiece. In the net, senior Nick Ellis posted six saves in the first half before redshirt freshman Chad Taylor relieved him in the second and collected one save.

In the second game, the Cardinal handed the Tritons their second loss in as many days with a 10-4 showing. Azevedo notched his third hat trick of the season with three more goals while Derse and Hudnut each tacked on two. Hopkins, Crum and senior Jeff Nesmith all tallied one goal for the Cardinal. Ellis remained solid in goal recording eight saves.

Stanford will play No. 4 California in the first semifinal match at 10:20 am. No. 3 UC Irvine and No. 11 Pacific will square off at 11:30 am. The winners of both matches will compete in the championship match at 6:30 pm and the third place game will begin at 5:20 pm.
