Stanford Sailors Earn 3rd At Sloop Champs

Sept. 28-29, 2002

Newport Beach, CA - Stanford senior Matt Hooks skippered with sophomore Jeff Allen and freshman Brian Haines crewing for the Pacific Coast Championship Sloop Qualifier, hosted by UC Irvine at their Newport Beach sailing center. Seven Pacific Coast schools made it to the finals. The two day event was sailed in 30-foot Shields sailboats. On Saturday, the winds blew 8 knots from the Southwest. It was evident that the Cardinal Sailors needed some warming up, as they earned a 6 and a 3 in the first two races. They were forced to take a penalty in the fourth race after accidentally committing a foul, turning an impressive 2nd into a discouraging four points. Challenged by Sunday's lighter air races, the team earned two 4th places and one 5th place finish. They earned 3rd overall, well out of reach of the impressive USC team, who, by winning this regatta, earned a berth to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Sloop Nationals (to be hosted by Brown U in Newport, RI).
