Boston, MA - Derrick Knight's 12-yard touchdown run with 36 secondsremaining lifted Boston College to a 34-27 comeback win over StanfordSaturday.
The loss spoiled the debut of Stanford head coach Buddy Teevens. Stanford (0-1) led Boston College 27-17 late in the third quarter untilKnight led the Eagles (2-0) come back.
Knight, who lost the starting job during preseason, came off the benchandran for 104 yards on 21 carries. He capped a five-play, 65-yard drive bybursting up the middle for the game-winning score. Eagles quarterback Brian St. Pierre completed 22 of 36 passes for 260yardsand one TD, but was intercepted three times.
Stanford freshman quarterback Kyle Matter completed 17 of 27 passes for 244 yards and one TD.
Michael Sgroi's second field goal, a 24-yarder early in the thirdquarter,moved Stanford ahead 20-17. Linebacker Michael Craven then returned aninterception 33 yards for a TD, giving the Cardinal a 10-point edge with1:44left in the third quarter.
But Boston College cut it to 27-24 on Knight's 10-yard TD run with12:15left in the fourth after linebacker Josh Ott recovered a fumble and returneditto the Cardinal 10.
After holding Stanford the next series, Sandro Sciortino kicked acareer-best 40-yard field goal, tying it at 27 with 6:27 to go. BC then got the ball back at its 35 and moved in for the game-winningscore. The teams were tied at 17 at halftime.
Stanford scored first on Sgroi's 42-yard field goal after BC's HorraceDoddfumbled on a second-and-goal from the 4. BC grabbed a 7-3 lead when St. Pierre hit Sean Ryan with a 3-yard TDpassearly in the second quarter, but Stanford regained the lead on Matter's7-yardscoring toss to Teyo Johnson.
Stanford made it 17-7 on Matter's 10-yard TD run after a Leigh Torrenceinterception.
