Davis, Calif. - Stanford brought 14 athletes to the 17th Annual Aggie Wrestling Open today on the campus of UC Davis. Sophomore Matt Gentry won four straight matches to claim first place at 157 pounds, while two Cardinal wrestlers placed at 174 pounds with senior Harold Penson taking fifth and redshirt freshman Ryan Hagen earning third place.

Gentry took the top spot as he earned his 19th win of the season. The sophomore started the day with a major decision over Air Force's Tanner Betsinger. The bout started without a score in the first period, but Gentry earned an escape and the first takedown to lead 3-0 heading into the final two minutes. Gentry finished the contest with a takedown and two near falls for the 11-1 victory. In his second match, Gentry scored another major decision as he downed Frank Richmond 9-1. In his semifinal bout, Gentry took Columbia's Dustin Tillman to overtime before notching a takedown for the 9-7 sudden victory. In the championship match, Gentry faced Josh Medina from Pima College and scored four points in the final period to come from behind for the 7-5 win.

Penson pinned three of his opponents to earn fifth place at 174 pounds. He pinned his first opponent at 3:45 and his second in only 1:15. Penson then dropped a close match to Pennsylvania's Matt Herrington 8-6, but rebounded with his third pin of the day over Cal State Fullerton's Jon Brandon at 2:35. Penson then faced Josh Fitzgerald out of Southern Oregon. He started the bout by scoring the first points on a takedown and after Fitzgerald recorded an escape, Penson notched a second takedown and a near fall for the 7-1 win. Penson's next bout against Pennsylvania's Greg Hallahan ended in a 2-1 loss, but he recovered in his final match and won a 13-0 major decision over Columbia's Nick Carrier for fifth place.

Hagen dropped Minnesota's Casey Flaherty 3-1 before suffering a tough 1-0 loss to Hallahan. Hagen entered the consolation bracket and never lost again, taking a 7-0 decision against Pennsylvania's Dustin Whiles and a 3-2 decision over Carrier to advance to the third place match. In the final bout, Hagen again faced Hallahan and in their second meeting, Hagen came away with a 5-2 win after posting a takedown in the first period, a reversal in the second and an escape in the third.

Stanford will be back in action next weekend as the Cardinal head north for three duals. On Friday, Stanford will face Oregon and Oregon State and the Cardinal will warp up on Saturday against Portland State.
