Stanford Defeats Portland State 24-20

Jan. 18, 2003

Portland, Ore. - Stanford (3-8) earned a 24-20 dual win this afternoon against Portland State at the Stott Center as the Cardinal finished up a weekend in Oregon. Sophomore Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) returned to the lineup for the Cardinal after being sidelined with an injury and pinned the Vikings' 133-pounder Zac Enoch in 35 seconds. Metzler's companions at the 2002 NCAA Championships also earned wins as sophomore Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) and junior Nathan Peterson (Georgetown, IN/Floyd Central) each tabbed a decision.

With the meet starting at 133 pounds, Metzler returned to the mat and made an immediate impact. Metzler earned his 12th win of the season after getting a quick takedown and then pinning Enoch at 35 seconds. The victory gave the Cardinal a 6-0 lead to start the meet.

The Cardinal dropped the next two weights, a 6-3 decision by Carlos Adamy and a forfeit win for Eddie Dahlen, but Gentry tied the meet at 9-9 after posting a 3-0 decision over Ryan Thomas at 157 pounds. With no score in the first two periods, Gentry tallied an escape to start the final two minutes before adding a takedown to secure the victory. With the win, Gentry improved to 22-4 on the season, including a 9-0 dual record.

The Vikings took the next two weights as Eric Arbogast edged sophomore Garrett Johnston (McAlester, OK/McAlester) for the 3-1 win before Quinn Collett scored an 11-0 major decision at 174 pounds to give Portland State a 16-9 lead. At 184 pounds, redshirt freshman Ryan Hagen (Sidney, MY/Sidney) took the forfeit win to bring the Cardinal within one, but the Vikings fought back and took a 15-6 major decision at 197 pounds.

With two bouts to go, the Cardinal was down five, but redshirt freshman Shawn Ritzenthaler (Powell, OH/Kilbourne) jumped out to a 8-0 lead with two three-point nearfalls in the first period before pinning Antonio Criado at 4:34. With the meet on the line, Peterson stepped onto the mat to secure to Stanford win. The first period turned out to be pivotal as Peterson took a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes. Casey Kotter stayed even with Peterson the rest of the way, but Peterson controlled the bout and finished with a 9-6 decision. The win is his twelfth of the season and clinched the 24-20 Cardinal victory.

Stanford returns to action next Sunday, January 26th when they will travel to Cal State Bakersfield for a 4 p.m. dual.
