BERKELEY, Calif. - Fourth-ranked Stanford University dropped a 4-3 decision at ninth-ranked California on Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Cardinal fell to 0-1 on the season, while the Golden Bears are 2-0.
Stanford opened the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 advantage. Ninth-ranked freshmen James Pade (Woodside, CA) breezed to an 8-1 win at No. 3, while third-ranked senior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK) clinched the point with a 9-7 win at No. 1.
The Cardinal extended the lead to 3-1 thanks to a pair of straight set victories. Martin, who is ranked 15th in the nation, defeated Or Dekel 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 and Pade breezed past Steve Berke 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 to move Stanford within one point of the season-opening victory.
The Golden Bears, however, rallied with a straight set win at No. 6 and three set wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to post the come-from-behind victory. The Golden Bears came back from a set down in both of the three set wins.
Stanford returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 8 against No. 35 TCU at 12:00 p.m. at the Taube Tennis Center. The match is the first of four in a row at home for the Cardinal.
