Stanford, Calif. - Senior David Martin (Tulsa, OK) picked up the Cardinal's first win, starting the singles sweep for the Stanford men's tennis team as they bounced back after dropping the double point to beat No. 52 Harvard, 6-1, on Monday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The Cardinal improve to 11-2 overall, while the Crimson fall to 7-7.
Stanford fell behind 1-0 to start the match when Harvard claimed the doubles point, gaining wins at No. 2 and 3. The fourth-ranked duo of Martin and Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) picked up the Cardinal's lone win, defeating David Lingman and Mark Riddell at No. 1, 8-5.
The Cardinal recovered and rattled off six consecutive singles victories. Martin, James Pade (Woodside, CA) each recorded straight set wins at No. 2, 3 and 5, respectively. Lipsky then captured the match for Stanford with a win at the top singles spot, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 over Lingman.
Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA) and Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA) then kept the singles sweep going. Sheng defeated Oliver Choo 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 and Warburg bounced back to beat George Turner, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 4.
Stanford will host 59th-ranked BYU on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Taube Tennis Center.
