Berkeley, Ca - Katy Elsbury was a third place finisher on Friday in the hammer during first day action at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at the University of California's Edwards Field.
Elsbury tossed the hammer 162-8 (49.58m). Jennifer Joyce of the Oakland Golden Bears Athletic Club won the event at 202-9 (62.80m), followed by Cammie Carroll, competing unattached, at 164-1 (50.01m). Stanford's Lindsay Brisbin placed seventh at 142-1 (43.30m).
The bulk of the meet, including running events, will take place on Saturday at Cal. Field events start at 11 a.m., while the running events are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
Several Stanford athletes are also competing at the Cal-Nevada State Collegiate Championships at San Diego State. There was one final event involving a Stanford athlete on Friday. Sean Knapp finished seventh in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:23.70. Scott Brandos of UC Santa Barbara won the event in a time of 9:09.13.
Several preliminaries were also contested. Jill Camarena had the best throw in the shot put and qualified for Saturday's final. Camarena threw the shot put, 54-2 1/2 (16.52m), nearly three feet further than the next best thrower.
In the discus, Molly Meyer, Camarena and Kitty Currier all qualified for Saturday's final. Meyer was second in her flight with a throw of 157-3 (47.94m). Camarena was first in her prelim with a toss of 157-2 (37.90m) while Currier was second in her flight with a throw of 155-4 (47.36m).
In the pole vault, Kathleen Donoghue, Leila Ben-Youssef, and Samantha Shepard each posted the best mark of the day at 12-6 1/4 (3.82m). The finals are slated for Saturday.
In the hammer, Donielle Colich qualified for Saturday's finals, but Sarah Hopping did not.Colich was sixth in the prelims at 173-9 (52.96m) while Hopping placed eighth at 174-2 (53.09m).
