Carlos Quentin leads the team and ranks second in the Pac-10 with a .416 batting average, .014 percentage points behind Stanford's single-season record of .430 set by Tom Williams in 1972 ... Quentin, who was named one of five finalists for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award on May 6, is also attempting to become the first Stanford player to hit .400 or better since 1991 ... Quentin has hit safely in 32 of his last 34 games (.456, 62-136) and had a career-high 26-game hit streak that lasted two months (February 22 - April 22) ... Stanford holds an all-time lead in the series over California, 220-207. Stanford swept the Golden Bears in a non-conference series at Sunken Diamond earlier this season (March 7-9; 11-2, 9-4, 11-2). Stanford 3, at San Jose State 0 (May 6, 2003)
Stanford extended its season-long road win streak to 11 games with a 3-0 victory at San Jose State in a non-conference game at Municipal Stadium. Stanford starter Tim Cunningham (2-2), the first of seven Cardinal pitchers that combined for Stanford's third shutout of the year and held the Spartans to four hits, earned the victory with 3.0 scoreless innings of one-hit work. Ryan McCally came on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and struck out the only batter he faced to end the game, earning his second save of the season and 13th of his career.
Stanford's Danny Putnam (2-4) was the only player for either team with more than one hit. Mark Jecmen (0.1 IP, 1 BB, 1 HB), Kodiak Quick (1.2 IP, 2 SO), Billy Paganetti (1.0 IP, 1 BB), Drew Ehrlich (1.0 IP, 1 H), Jonny Dyer (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) and McCally (0.1 IP, 1 SO) combined with Cunningham for the shutout.
San Jose State starter Jose Amaya (3-4), the first of five Spartan pitchers, suffered the loss by giving up one run and two hits over the first 2.0 innings.
LAST PAC-10 SERIES GAME REVIEWS (USC)Stanford 22, at USC 10 (May 3, 2003)
John Mayberry, Jr. (5-6, HR, 6 RBI) set new career-highs with five hits and six RBI to lead Stanford to a 22-10 victory over USC in the delayed opener of a key three-game Pac-10 series at Dedeaux Field. Ryan Garko (4-6, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) also hit a homer, tied a career-high with four hits and drove in three runs. Stanford's 22 runs and 18 RBI were season-highs.
Stanford scored 16 runs in the final three innings to break open a game that had been tied 6-6 after six innings and posted the most runs ever by a USC opponent at Dedeaux Field. The old record was held by Arizona (20, April 18, 1982).
Danny Putnam (3-3, 2B, 2 HBP) continued his hot hitting for the Cardinal with a three-hit game. Donny Lucy was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Jed Lowrie had a pair of career-highs with three RBI and three runs scored.
David O'Hagan (5-1) got credit for his fifth win of the season as the first of three Stanford relievers, scattering one run and three hits over 1.2 innings.
Stanford 8, at USC 3 - Game 1; Stanford 8, at USC 3 - Game 2 (May 4, 2003)
Stanford stayed in first place in the Pac-10 by winning both ends of a doubleheader versus USC by identical 8-3 scores to conclude a three-game sweep of the Trojans. Ryan Garko (4-4, 2 HR, 7 RBI, SB) hit a pair of homers, including his first career grandslam in the first inning, drove in a career-high seven runs and tied a career-high with four hits in the nightcap. Mark Romanczuk (9-0) picked up his Pac-10 leading ninth victory with a complete-game three-hitter in the opener.
Romanczuk allowed just three hits in the opener, the fewest by a Cardinal pitcher in a complete game effort this season, as he went the distance for the second time this year.
In the nightcap, Stanford starter Matt Manship (2-3) picked up the victory in his first collegiate start. Manship lasted a career-long 7.2 innings, scattering three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Garko finished the doubleheader 6-for-7 with two homers, nine RBI and a stolen base.
Carlos Quentin (2-4, 2B) had his 22nd double of the season in the nightcap and now ranks tied for fourth on Stanford's single-season list in that category.
NOTEBOOKTOP OF THE PAC
Stanford leads the Pac-10 standings by one and a half games over Arizona State (10-5 Pac-10) and is two games ahead of Arizona (11-7 Pac-10) with six conference games remaining for the Cardinal. Stanford has already won two-of-three versus Arizona State but Arizona holds the tiebreaker edge over the Cardinal after taking two-of-three at Sunken Diamond. Stanford has won a total of 18 conference championships in school history, including 16 Pac-10 crowns (includes Southern Division and shared titles). Stanford's last Pac-10 championship came in 2000 when the team finished in a three-way tie for the conference title with Arizona State and UCLA. Stanford has finished second in the conference behind two-time defending league champion USC each of the last two years and has been among the top two in the conference standings (includes Pac-10 Southern Division) for nine straight seasons and 20 times in the last 22 years.
STANFORD EXTENDS ROAD WIN STREAK TO 11 GAMES
Stanford extended its road win streak to 11 games with its most recent victory away from Sunken Diamond, a 3-0 win at San Jose State on Tuesday, May 6. Stanford, which has not lost a road game since lost 7-6 at Arizona State on March 22, started the streak with victories in the final two games of its series versus the Sun Devils (3/23 - 3/24) and has continued the run with a series sweep at Washington State (4/4 - 4/7), as well as victories at Santa Clara (4/8) and Sacramento State (4/22) before sweeping USC last Saturday-Sunday (5/3 - 5/4).
STANFORD CONTINUES SERIES SUCCESS
Stanford has won nine of its last 10 and 43 of its last 50 series overall. The Cardinal had won 15 straight Pac-10 home series, as well as eight consecutive overall and eight in a row in Pac-10 play before Arizona won two-of-three at Sunken Diamond (4/25 - 4/27). The Cardinal rebounded by sweeping a three-game set at USC (5/3 - 5/4) in its most recent series.
CARLOS QUENTIN NAMED USA BASEBALL GOLDEN SPIKES FINALIST
Carlos Quentin was named one of five finalists for the prestigious 2003 Golden Spikes award announced by USA Baseball in partnership with Major League Baseball on May 6. Quentin becomes the 10th finalist from Stanford in the 26-year history of the award honoring the top amateur baseball player in the country. This year's winner will be announced on various regional cable networks on Tuesday, July 15, the same day as the 2003 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Quentin is continuing his run at Stanford's single-season batting average record and ranks second in the Pac-10 with a .416 average that is .014 percentage points off the school record of .430 set by Tom Williams in 1972. Quentin is also attempting to become the first Stanford player to hit .400 since David McCarty hit .420 in 1991. In addition, Quentin leads the Cardinal in hits (74, #4 Pac-10), runs scored (52, co-leader with Sam Fuld, #6T Pac-10), doubles (22, #3 Pac-10), walks (30, #6 Pac-10), hit-by-pitches (10, #4T Pac-10), extra-base hits (29, co-leader with Ryan Garko), on-base percentage (.520, #3 Pac-10) and multiple-hit games (21, co-leader with Ryan Garko). His 22 doubles already rank tied for fourth on Stanford's all-time single-season list as he is seven away from the school record of 29 set by Troy Paulsen in 1990. Quentin ranks second on the team in stolen bases (9) and total bases (116), as well as third in homers (6) and RBI (37). Quentin has hit safely in 32 of his last 34 games (2/22, Game 1 - 5/6), going 62-for-136 (.456) with 20 doubles, one triple, six homers, 34 RBI and seven stolen bases during the stretch. He posted a two-month career-high 26-game hit streak (2/22, Game 1 - 4/22, .495, 51-103, 18 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 30 RBI, 7 SB) during the stretch.
RYAN GARKO EARNS TRIO OF WEEKLY HONORS, ALL FOR THE FIRST TIME
Ryan Garko's huge series at USC (5/3 - 5/4) in which he hit .769 (10-13) with three homers, 12 RBI and a stolen base with a 1.615 slugging percentage has earned him a share of three weekly honors as Garko has been named the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week, Pac-10 Player of the Week and College Baseball Insider West Regional Player of the Week, all for the first time in his career. Garko, a candidate for the 2003 Johnny Bench Award awarded to the nation's top catcher, capped the USC series in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday by going 4-for-4 with his first career grandslam and a career-high seven RBI. Garko has extended his team lead in homers (13, #6T Pac-10), RBI (64, #2T Pac-10), total bases (125, #5 Pac-10), slugging percentage (.698, #6 Pac-10) and multiple-RBI games (20), while ranking tied for first on the club along with Carlos Quentin in multiple-hit games (21) and extra-base hits (29), as well as second in batting average (.391) and hit-by-pitches (8). Garko has already surpassed his career-high RBI total of 55 last season and is within one homer of the 14 long balls he hit a year ago. Garko has just 11 strikeouts in 179 at bats and has hit safely in 20 of his last 23 games with a .488 batting average (42-86), 10 doubles, nine homers, 39 RBI and an .919 slugging percentage during the stretch. He has hit a league-high nine homers in 18 Pac-10 games.
MARK ROMANCZUK NAMED PAC-10 PITCHER OF THE WEEK, PAC-10 WIN LEADER
Mark Romanczuk was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week (5/5) for the third time in the last five weeks after pitching a complete-game three-hitter in an 8-3 win in the first game of a doubleheader at USC (5/4). Romanczuk is the Pac-10 and club leader in victories with a perfect 9-0 record and was previously named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week on April 1 and 21. Romanczuk has recorded a 3.63 ERA and added two saves with 54 strikeouts in 67.0 innings. He has two of the team's seven complete games. Romanczuk has earned an invitation to the 2003 USA National Baseball Trials -- to be held in Tucson, Arizona from June 21-27.
JOHN HUDGINS LEADS PAC-10 IN FIVE CATEGORIES
John Hudgins (7-3, 3.29) leads the Pac-10 in innings pitched (104.0), strikeouts (96), strikeouts looking (32), complete games (4) and starts (14, co-leader), while ranking second behind teammate Mark Romanczuk in opponents' batting average (.238). He has three complete games in his last five outings and lasted at least 6.0 innings in each of his first 13 starts before his shortest start of the season (5.0 IP) in his last start at USC (5/3). Hudgins has gone 7.0 or more innings nine times with complete games versus Arizona (4/25), Oregon State (4/17), Washington State (4/4) and California (3/7). Hudgins struck out a career-high 11 in 8.0 scoreless two-hit innings in a 9-1 win over Sacramento State (4/11). He also carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 4-1 win versus Fresno State (2/14) and earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors (2/11) after holding Florida State (2/7) to just one run and six hits with 10 strikeouts over the first 9.0 innings of a game Stanford eventually won, 2-1 in 12 innings. MATT MANSHIP WINS FIRST COLLEGIATE START, AMONG PAC-10 SAVE LEADERS
Matt Manship picked up a victory in his first collegiate start in the second game of a doubleheader sweep at USC (5/4), scattering three runs and eight hits with three strikeouts over a career-high 7.2 innings. Manship (2-3, 3.67) made his first 14 career appearances out of the bullpen and has recorded five saves to rank tied for fifth in the Pac-10. Manship is also just two saves from entering Stanford's all-time single-season list in that category.
SAM FULD AND CARLOS QUENTIN ON ALL-TIME BATTING AVERAGE LIST
Sam Fuld (.353, 256-726) is currently tied for fifth on Stanford's all-time batting average list, while Carlos Quentin (.349, 233-668) is tied for 10th. Fuld began the 2003 campaign on top of Stanford's career batting average list (.367) but has lost .014 points off his career mark. Quentin began the year with a .324 mark but has added .025 points to his career average.

CARDINAL LOOKING TO EXTEND STRING OF 40-WIN SEASONS TO NINE
Stanford is looking to extend its string of 40-win seasons to nine in 2003 after picking up its eighth straight 40-win season last year by finishing with a 47-18 overall mark. The last time Stanford didn't win 40 games was when the club finished 27-28 in 1993.
STANFORD ASSURES ITSELF OF ANOTHER WINNING SEASON
Stanford has assured itself of another winning season in 2003. The Cardinal has now been above .500 in 38 of the last 39 and 55 of the last 57 campaigns.
CARDINAL, WHITE AND BLUE
Stanford emerged on top of a recent USA National Team player study. Stanford has produced 20 Team USA players that have played in 28 seasons over the last 18 years, more than any other collegiate program in the nation in both categories. Stanford is also tops in the nation with at least one players on the Team USA roster for 16 consecutive years. Four current Stanford players have participated with Team USA -- Tim Cunningham (2001), Sam Fuld (2001, '02), Ryan Garko (2001, '02), Carlos Quentin (2001, '02). Also, with the selection of Quentin as one of five finalists for the 2003 Golden Spikes Award, Stanford equaled Miami for the most finalists in the history of the award with 10. No Stanford player has ever won the honor.
STANFORD RETURNS HOME VERSUS SAINT MARY'S AND UCLA NEXT WEEK
Stanford will return home for a non-conference game versus Saint Mary's (Tuesday, May 13) before hosting UCLA (Friday-Sunday, May 16-18) in its final Pac-10 series of the season next week. Stanford leads the all-time series over Saint Mary's, 45-8. Last year, the Cardinal picked up a 19-2 victory on April 16 at Sunken Diamond and has won the last 16 meetings between the schools with the last Saint Mary's victory coming in a 1-0 win at Stanford on February 1, 1994. Stanford leads the all-time series over UCLA, 176-132. The Cardinal won two-of-three in Los Angeles last year (5/17 - 5/19; W, 13-0; L, 4-9; W, 17-4) and also won two-of-three games between the teams the last time they met at Sunken Diamond (4/7-4/8/01; L, 4-6; W, 9-0; W, 11-2). Carlos Quentin is having a huge season, leading the club and ranking second in the Pac-10 in batting average (.416). Quentin also paces the team in hits (74, #4 Pac-10), runs scored (52, #6T Pac-10, co-leader with Sam Fuld), doubles (22, #3 Pac-10), walks (31, #6 Pac-10), hit-by-pitches (10, #4T Pac-10), extra-base hits (29, co-leader with Ryan Garko), on-base percentage (.520, #3 Pac-10) and multiple-hit games (21, co-leader with Ryan Garko). Garko has team-highs in home runs (13, #6T Pac-10), RBI (64, #2T Pac-10), multiple-RBI games (20), total bases (125, #5 Pac-10), slugging percentage (.698, #6T Pac-10), extra-base hits (29, co-leader with Carlos Quentin), multiple-hit games 21 (co-leader with Carlos Quentin) and sacrifice flies (4, co-leader with Jed Lowrie). Sam Fuld paces the Cardinal at bats (206, #3 Pac-10), triples (6, co-leader with John Mayberry, Jr.) and runs scored (52, co-leader with Carlos Quentin). Brian Hall has a team-high 12 stolen bases, while Tobin Swope paces the squad with six sacrifice bunts. Garko (.391), Putnam (.386), Lowrie (.320), Mayberry (.316), Fuld (.316) and Tobin Swope (.307) join Quentin above the .300 mark.
PITCHING REPORT
Stanford's ERA currently sits at 4.19 (#2 Pac-10) and the Cardinal has held its opponents to a Pac-10 low .248 batting average. John Hudgins (7-3, 3.00) is the Pac-10's leader in five categories -- innings pitched (104.0), strikeouts (96), strikeouts looking (32), starts (14, shares Pac-10 lead) and complete games (4). Hudgins also has the team's lowest ERA (#3 Pac-10). Mark Romanczuk (9-0, 3.63, 2 SV, 67.0 IP, 54 SO) leads the Pac-10 in victories and has two complete games. Romanczuk has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week three times in the last five weeks (4/1, 4/20, 5/5). Ryan McCally (3-2, 5.54, 2 SV, 65.0 IP, 36 SO) has been Stanford's other starter for most of the season and has one of the team's seven complete games but may also move back into a prominent role in the bullpen. Matt Manship (2-3, 3.67, 5 SV, 41.2 IP, 34 SO) picked up a win in his first collegiate start at USC (5/4) in his most recent outing after coming out of the bullpen in his 14 first outings to pace the club and rank tied for fifth in the Pac-10 in saves. David O'Hagan (5-1, 4.86, 3 SV, 37.0 IP, 37 SO) and Kodiak Quick (1-0, 5.55, 3 SV, 24.1 IP, 25 SO) have added three saves each. O'Hagan has also won five games out of the bullpen, while Jonny Dyer (2-1, 3.60, 15.0, 7 SO) and Tim Cunningham (2-2, 6.04, 25.1 IP, 16 SO) have picked up a pair of victories each. Quick and Drew Ehrlich (1-0, 4.42, 18.1 IP, 16 SO) have one win a piece. Stanford has already posted 15 saves, second in the conference and within eight of the school record of 23 set in 2001.
DEFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford has a .970 fielding percentage (#3 Pac-10) and has been errorless in six of its last 13 contests and 16 times overall. John Mayberry, Jr. leads the club and ranks tied for second in the Pac-10 with 385 putouts, while Tobin Swope has a team-high 130 assists (#7 Pac-10). Mayberry's 16 putouts at Washington State (4/5), as well as eight assists by Swope at USC (5/4 - Game 2) are single-game team highs. Stanford has turned a season-high three double plays twice versus Nevada (2/17) and at USC (5/3).
STANFORD HEAD COACH MARK MARQUESS
One of the nation's premier collegiate coaches, Mark Marquess is in his 27th season at the helm of Stanford Baseball in 2003 with an overall record of 1122-547-5 (.672) and a 454-293 (.607) mark in Pac-10 action. The 1969 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two NCAA titles, two CWS runner-up showings, 12 College World Series appearances, 12 NCAA Regional titles, four NCAA Super Regional championships and 10 Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division regular season titles. The Cardinal has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 20 times in the its first 26 seasons under Marquess. Marquess began the 2003 season ranked 10th in victories and 16th in winning percentage among active Division I baseball coaches. Marquess moved into sole possession of 20th place on the all-time victory list with his 1101st career victory at Texas (2/22/03 - Game 1). Recent milestone victories were his 1100th career win versus Nevada (2/17/03) and his 1000th against Florida State (2/9/01). He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on eight occasions. The Cardinal has assured itself of its 26th winning campaign in 27 seasons under his leadership and has finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific-10 (formerly Pac-10 Southern Division) 20 times in the last 22 years. Stanford has had 104 professional baseball draft picks in the past 18 seasons, including 13 first round selections in the last 16 years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford's 1967 College World Series squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization.

STANFORD COACHING STAFF
Dean Stotz is in his 27th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his fourth season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 campaign. Stotz served for 23 years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis is in his fourth season as Stanford's pitching coach, while Dave Nakama is in his fourth year overall as a Stanford assistant coach.
